Overview

The Problem

LocalEyez is a startup that focuses on aggregating a list of activities specific to their user's preferences. They are moving to a mobile first approach and their new app, using machine learning technology, needs to assist users to find local events and experiences.

The Solution

Overhaul and tailor the UI to our user needs, including personalized and relevant user information, with the goal of making the app engaging and delightful

Design the onboarding process to include user's interests and ensure the user can find an activity to attend

Roles and Responsibilities

On a team of six, I was brought on as the Product Designer and was expected to focus on the app's UI design. With my UX skills, I also focused on improving the UX design to be more human-centered.

Discovery and Research

The Competitive Analysis, Target Audience, and User Personas were all provided by LocalEyez's business analyst.

Competitive Analysis

Airbnb Experiences: This is Airbnb's initiative to build connections between its visiting customers and locals. Users can choose categories, hosts, and locations to find something that interests them. Categories for experiences include animals, cooking, adventures, and more. Choosing a host allows users to select an experience by clicking on an image of a person and a description of the activity, such as "mole cooking class with an Indigenous cook." And users can search for locations to stay in, either locally or around the world.

Classpass: Classpass is a fitness membership that gives its customers a range of exciting workout choices. Founded in 2013, ClassPass has over 8,000 partners in 39 cities worldwide, allowing its users to work out wherever they live and travel. Its proprietary technology lets users choose from over a million fitness classes in an easy booking process.

Meetup: Meetup is an online service used to create groups that host local in-person events. The company had more than 35 million users as of 2017. Customers can use Meetup for networking purposes, to make new friends, or to find an activity group.

User Personas

Information Architecture

Sitemap

The sitemap was given to me by LocalEyez and as you can tell in the Hi-fi prototype, I made sitemap adjustments to better the user journey.

Wireframes

The desktop wireframes were given to me by LocalEyez as inspiration for the app.

Branding

LocalEyez's Visual Design Update

Due to LocalEyez's visual design not being finalized yet, I was given complete freedom to uproot their branding. They gave me their original mood board and color pallet, which informed my redesign.

LocalEyez's New Look

I created logos, updated the type fonts and color pallet, used similar photo references, and created a UI library that is warm, fun, and modern.

Key Images

I took a slightly different approach - in that - I didn't create any wireframes. With all the information and research given, I already had a good idea of a look I wanted and dove right into designing. These key images show the onboarding process and the remixed Feed, Explore, and Profile screens - alongside their desktop wireframes.

Baby Steps

This project is still in its infancy as testing has yet to be done. It was fun to be able to sink my teeth into this project post inception and, as the sole UI designer, being able to soak in the research and pivot the design strategy is the type of challenge I live for. Not only was I able to breathe life into the app, but I made the design more user centered and fun.
